How can i make a canopy out of paper? I need one like the ones you would see on the old grocery stores?

My daughter is doing a reading fair project on the book "Because of Winn - Dixie". She wants to make her story board look like a grocery store. I thought it would be cute to make a canopy like the ones on old stores but I'm unsure how to start. I have great ideas but I'm not too crafty. Any and all help is appreciated.
